Newspaper-Articles

  • 8 Oct 1920: A correspondent at Beaconsfield Upper writes:- "A petition has been taken round in the Beaconsfield Riding, requesting R Bell, of North Beaconsfield, to nominate for the impending vacancy in the Berwick Council. The petition has been well supported. Mr R Bell is a returned soldier and secretary of the R.S.A. (Emerald Branch). Since returning from active service he has settled in North Beaconsfield and has taken up a considerable holding in the district. Mr Bell, we feel sure, would prove an active member and a live wire in the council, and would do his best for the district generally. His interests and sympathies would be one with all of us in the district.17
  • 13 Oct 1923: As a result of criticism in these columns at various periods drawing attention to the shocking condition of the Beaconsfield road, coupled with energetic action by Crs. Bevan and Knight, and the North Beaconsfield Progress Association, a deputation consisting of Crs. Wilson (president of the Berwick Shire, Bevan and Knight and Messrs. F. Russell, J. G. Evans and R. Bell, waited upon Mr. Calder (chairman of the Country Roads Board) in Melbourne on Wednesday.
Mr. Chandler, M.L.C., in introducing the deputation, apologised for the absence of Mr. Groves, M.L.A., who, owing to an important Cabinet meeting, could not attend, but was strongly in favor of the proposition.
He strongly urged the necessity for the making of a new road, as the present one had been for a number of years in a shocking condition, and a very serious handicap to settlers in that part of the shire. He urged that the Country Roads Board look into the matter at once. Other members of the deputation supported the remarks of Mr. Chandler.
Mr. Bell emphasised the fact that it was estimated that during the coming season the number of cases of fruit that would be sent from the district would be in the region of 25,000, a great proportion of which would be picked from returned soldiers' holdings.
Mr Calder was so impressed with the statements made that he gave a definite promise to visit the district on Wednesday next.
Members of the deputation greatly appreciated the courtesy extended to them by Mr. Calder, and are sanguine that this officer will be fully convinced as to the urgency of the work. If any district in the State deserves a portion of the two million pounds which the Treasurer explained had been set apart for roads, the residents of this part of the Berwick Shire do.18
  • 18 Sep 1925: BEACONSFIELD UPPER.-At the annual meeting of the North Beaconsfield Progress Association the following officers were elected:-Mr. J. G. Lewis, president (re-elected); Messrs. Holman and Matthews, vice-presidents; Mr. D. Kerr, treasurer; Mr. S. Smith, secretary; Messrs. G. Harris, U. Harris, Brain. Logan, and Cowper, committee.
The report showed 28 members, an increase of 12 in the year. Mr. R. Bell (secretary) resigned on leaving the district, and for his services to the association he was elected a life member. There is now a continuous telephone service at the Beaconsfield Upper exchange and a mail service. Four lectures had been given during the year on pruning, pigs, cows, and manures.19

Book*1922Mr. Blanche, Architect, a timely helper.
An interesting character now appears on the scene. Mr. Blanche, a City Architect, heard of the problems and offered his services free. At a personal interview with the Committee he presented several schemes, one of which was approved for costing. His plans were approved in August 1922, and he and the building contractor Ron Hayball put forward further suggestions for cost savings. A competing contractor, Leslie Taylor of Dandenong, revised his tender to £851 ($1,702) but Hayball's final offer of £800 ($1,600) was accepted.
From correspondence, Mr. Blanche appears to have been a very capable, honest and conscientious man, though of an excessively retiring disposition. He was so nervous at the dedication ceremony that he developed a severe migraine, and had to rest at "Runnymede" instead of joining in the social celebrations. Poor man! Later, he wrote to the Treasurer asking if the Committee could let him have one or two pounds towards his expenses. He apologised for the request, after offering to give his services free, but the extravagance of his fiancee had left him with no car, no cash and no girl. Reading the correspondence, one feels glad that the Committee awarded him five guineas ($12.50) and brought his name and generous services to the attention of the Archbishop of Melbourne, who had admired and praised his work.3

  • 5 Jul 1924: Improvements at Corio. Apparently the future residents of Corio do not intend the industrial portion of the suburb to outgrow the residential area; for Mr. J. R. C. Blanche, architect, of 274 Collins Street, has arranged for the immediate erection of six houses.22

  • 27 Mar 1925: YOUNG WOMAN ARRESTED
A charge of having embezzled £50 from her employers, the Phoenix Building, Finance and Agency Co. Ltd., was made against Eileen Blanche, 26, at the City Watchhouse today.24
  • 3 Apr 1925: STRANGE LETTER Absolves Woman From Charge
An extraordinary letter was read at the City Court today, when Eileen Blanche, a young woman, appeared on remand charged with having embezzled £50, belonging to the Phoenix Building, Finance and Agency Co. Pty., Ltd.
The charge was withdrawn. Blanche had been arrested on the information of Albert Wilberforce Blanche.
Mr C. Barnett, the woman's counsel, said today that after last week's proceedings the informant met the defendant outside the court, and asked her to go with him to his office, where he handed her a letter dated March 28, 1925. It was headed the Phoenix Building, Finance and Agency Co. Pty. Ltd., 80 Swanston street, Melbourne, and read:—
    To whom it may concern:—
The accusation against the bearer, charged at the City Court this morning for embezzling £50 of the above company's money.
I, the undersigned, beg to state that all monies received for and on behalf were duly returned to me in full, and my reason for accusing her of same was simply to convince her that these things can be done, guilt or not guilty, and I truthfully apologise for the embarrassment and false imprisonment and humiliation I caused her relatives. This is written of my own free will, to try and make amends for all the sorrow I have caused her since Friday last.—Yours faithfully, J.R.C. Blanche.—N.B.: I may also state that the revolver found in her possession is my property, and I take full responsibility for same.—J.R.C.B.
"This company," said Mr Barnett, "is a swindling concern from start to finish, and all the money that this woman ever received has been paid to them."
Informant's solicitors said they had no evidence to offer, and defendant was discharged.
Mr R. Knight, P.M., said she had her remedy if she had been maltreated.25
