  • 14 Aug 1941: TEST SELECTOR PASSES. Sudden Death of Mr W. J. Johnson.
    One of Victoria's best-known cricket personalities, Mr W. J. ("Bill") Johnson, V.C.A. treasurer and State and Test selector, died suddenly at his home today. He was 57.
    AFTER attending his business at Kensington yesterday, Mr Johnson complained of a pain last night, and was visited by Dr. Roy Park, an old friend, and one of his co-State selectors. After a cup of tea, Mr Johnson had a fatal neart seizure at about 8 a.m. today.
    He is survived by a widow, two cricketing sons, Ian and Colin, and a brother, Joe. Ian, South Melbourne and Victorian all-rounder, is now Leading Aircraftman in R.A.A.F., stationed at Deniliquin (N.S.W.) Colin, North Melbourne all-rounder, is in Military Camp at Mt. Martha.
    The flag on the V.C.A. building was flown half-mast today as a tribute to Mr Johnson. The funeral will leave his residence, 204 Page Street, Middle Park, at 3 p.m. tomorrow, for Footscray Cemetery. Arrangements are in the hands of Joseph Allison Pty. Ltd., North Brunswick.
    Mr Johnson's death, which removes a popular figure from Australian cricket, will be widely regretted, and nowhere more than at North Melbourne, where he has been an outstanding cricket personality for years. As a successful slow spin bowler and useful bat, he played for North, first, as junior, from 1905 to 1931, and had a game or two for Victoria in 1924. He was North Melbourne C.C. treasurer from 1908 to 1939, when he became a vice-president of his club. He became a V.C.A. delegate in 1927. After some years on the Victorian Cricket Association executive, Mr Johnson, three years ago, succeeded the late Mr Stott as V.C.A. treasurer. He privately accompanied W. M. Woodfull's 1930 Test team to England, and helped to choose Australian sides for the 1936-7 series in Australia and 1938 tour of England. He has been a Victorian cricket selector for a number of years. — P. J. Millard.4

  • 4 Jun 1920: ILLINGWORTH.—A loving tribute to the memory of my dear husband, Private James this life June 4, 1919, after two years' active service. Aged 38 years.
    With tears I saw you sinking,
    I watched you fade away;
    My heart is sadly aching
    For you, dear Jim, today.
    Your weary hours and days of pain
    And troubled nights are past;
    Your ever patient, worn-out frame
    Has found sweet rest at last.
    Ever remembered.
    Inserted by his loving wife, Nell Gwynne Illingworth, Hotel Claremont.
    ILLINGWORTH.—A proud and loving tribute to the memory of my darling daddy, Private James Illingworth, late 44th Battalion, who departed this life on June 4; 1919, after two years active service. Aged 38 years.
    I Iittle thought, darling daddy, when I said good-bye,
    We parted for ever and you were to die,
    The grief that I felt words cannot tell
    That I was not with you to say farewell.
