Warrants for the arrest of four men were taken out by Senior-detective O'Keefe yesterday eveinug following the daring theft of a motor-car from a garage in Lonsdale street, cit, during the afternoon. For some time Mr A. A. Farthing, of Gleneira road, Caulfield, has garaged his Bentley motor-car valued at £850 in premises occupied by Mr Louis Dupont, motorcar salesman, of Lonsdale street, city.
Shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon Mr Dupont and a salesman were demonstrating motor-cars to customers. Mr Scott, another salesman, was in charge of the garage, when four men entered and began to inspect several motor-cars. Later Mr Scott saw that three of the men had left the garage. Shortly afterwards he noticed that the Bentley car was missing, it having apparently been pushed out of the garage. He telephoned to the police. Senior-detective O'Keefe and Detectives Carey, Harding, and Lacey, who are making inquiries visited several houses yesterday afternoon, but could find no trace of the men, descriptions of whom had been supplied to them. Later warrants for the arrest of the men were issued.12

Newspaper-Articles

  • 9 Nov 1909: THE COOLGARDIE CLUB FATALITY. The adjourned inquiry into the causes surrounding the death of Norman Gladstone Robertson at the Coolgardie Club on the evening of Tuesday, November 2, was resumed on Saturday by Mr. J. K. Hall, J.P., acting coroner, and a jury composed of Messrs. G. H. Kingsbury (foreman), R. Penna, an I. J. Jarvis.
Patrick Joseph Leahy, steward at the Coolgardie Club, said that on November 2 he came on duty at 6.30 p.m. and relieved deceased. He could not say where deceased then went. Shortly after 7 p.m. he heard a report from Dunlevie and then saw deceased lying on the ground in front of the club. He rang for Drs. Ellis and Mitchell. The deceased was lying on the south side of the steps. It would have been possible for him to have been in that position by falling off the lower balcony, which was about 6 ft. high. When he relieved the deceased he was perfectly sober.
James Ross, carter, said that on the evening of November 2 at 7.15, he was coming along Hunt street into Bayley-street. When about 75 yards' from the club he heard something fall and when he reached the club he saw the deceased lying on the ground. He found him to be unconscious. He did not think it possible, from his position, that he fell off the lower balcony as he was lying about 6 ft out on the footpath. He had been informed that about a minute before deceased fell he was not sitting on the lower balcony.
Thos. J. Dunlevie, a miner, said he was on the east side of Hunt street about 7.10 p.m. When opposite the club he saw somebody sitting on the lower balcony of the club. He heard a thud and went across the road. Deceased was moaning and breathing heavily.
Dr. R. M. Mitchell, D.M.O., said he had been called to see the deceased at the Coolgardie Club. At 7.20 pm he found the deceased lying on the ground, Dr. Ellis being with him. He was unconscious, and his symptoms pointed to a fracture of the base of the skull. He was of opinion that death was caused by a fracture of the skull and accompanying compression of the brain.
To the Coroner: Such injuries might possibly be caused by a fall from the lower balcony, but he thought it highly improbable. From the injuries he thought deceased must have turned over as he fell. The indications at the club upstairs, in his opinion, justified the belief that the deceased had fallen from the top baconvy. Had he fallen from the lower balcony he would have been in a different position from that in which he was found. Constable Horne gave evidence as to the identity of the deceased.
The witness Lee, being recalled by the coroner, said he believed it was the habit of deceased to sit on the top balcony at night.
The jury found that the deceased, Norman Gladstone Robertson, met his death at Coolgardie on the evening of November 2, 1909, by accidentally falling from a balcony of the Coolgardie Club, and thereby fracturing the base of the skull.6
