  • 5 Feb 1909: SUICIDE OF AN INVALID. HERR GRUNDT'S DEATH.
No positive evidence could be adduced at the inquest held yesterday as to whether Herr Lara Otto Rolls Grundt, a well known masseur, who cut his throat in the private hospital of Dr. O'Hara, Collins-street, on Tuesday, was of unsound mind at the time be destroyed himself. Herr Grundt had undergone an operation in the hospital for the relief of a painful internal malady, but, according to the observations of the nurses, who were in constant attendance upon him, and of his wife, he had never exhibited any suicidal tendencies. The nurse who was looking after him last saw him alive at 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday, when she was engaged in taking his temperature. She had occasion to leave the room for five minutes, and on her return found him bleeding copiously from a wound in his throat inflicted with a razor, which he had taken from a bag beneath his bed. The Coroner, in recording a verdict of suicide, said there was some evidence of mental depression, probably induced by the persistent nature of the malady from which he suffered.8
