(Witness) Inquest8 Jan 1926He witnessed the Inquest of John 'Jack' McNaughton on 8 Jan 1926; 1925/1361. McNaughton, John, Injuries accidentally caused, Berwick.
Evidence by Elizabeth Jennnigs:
This deponent Elizabeth Jennings on her oath saith, I am a married woman residing at Beaconsfield.
I reside about 200 yards from where the accident took place. Returning from posting a letter, I saw the bullock team coming towards my house. Jophn McNaughton the owner was riding on the wagon. When he got opposite my house, he jumped off the wagon for the purpose of heading the bullocks towards the Upper Beaconsfield road instead of continuing straight along the bush tracks they were accustomed to travel. McNaughton cracked his whip. I don't know if he struck the leaders of his team but the bullocks began to gallop down the track towards the creek, instead of travelling the road he intended they should take, and I saw nothing further of his progress. About 20 minutes afterwards I was informed that an accident had happened and that Mr McNaughton had been killed, I then went to the scene of the accident, and saw the dead body of McNaughton, I did not examine the body, as it was apparent that life was extinct.
I did nothing further, as I was informed that a doctor had been sent for.
When I last saw McNaughton he was chasing the wagon, and calling out to the team to stop. I know that the wagon was heavily laden with cement.
Elizabeth Jennings, sworn at Berwick Eight day of January 1925 at Berwick before William Harvey-Smith
This deponent Frank Barnes on his oath saith, I am a Labourer (aged 15 years) residing at Beaconsfield with my parents.
I was on my way on Monday the 21st December to pick gum leaves down the bush road towards the Cardinia Creek, about 5 pm and I discovered the body of a man lying on the bush track. I was driving and stopped about 20 yards from him, and then returned to the residence of Mr Brown some 200 yards distant, and informed Mr Brown of what I had seen, and asked him to accompany me to the scene of the accident. Prior to getting Mr Brown I did not know who the deceased was. Upon reaching the body I discovered it was John McNaughton. I thought he was dead and I did not touch the body. I left Mr Brown at the body and continued my journey down the track and the team and wagon all intact some 400 yards further on where they had come to a standstill
Frank Barnes
sworn at Berwick Eight day of January 1925 at Berwick before William Harvey-Smith
This deponent Enos Brown on his oath saith, I am a labourer residing at Upper Beaconsfield.
At about 4.50 pm on the 21st December last, standing at my back door, I saw the bullock team galloping down the bush track, behind the little store, I saw McNaughton running behind his wagon. The team then became obscured from my view through a cottage and duct which was flying. Then about 10 minutes or perhaps 15, the previous witness, Barnes, came and told me that a man was lying on the road and he did not know what had happened. I asked him which road, and he said the back road, I said that it must be John McNaughton, as I had previously seen the bullocks bolting. I then went with Barnes, and saw the body, which I at once recognised as McNaughton. I placed my hand over his heart and then concluded he was dead, as the heart was not beating. While I was examining the body, a Mr Lewin a line man, in the employment of the telegraph department came along, and I asked him to communicate with a doctor and the police.
E Brown
sworn at Berwick eighteenth day of January 1925 at Berwick before William Harvey-Smith deputy coroner
there is further evidence by Dr Percy Langmore and mounted police costable Arthur Francis De La Rue.5

Place in Upper Beac*31 Oct 1979 Barnes Drive. In 1979 the Shire of Pakenham contacted the Upper Beaconsfield Association and the Berwick-Pakenham Historical Society as to the naming of an unnamed street, leading off Beaconsfield-Emerald Road (north of High Street, Guys Hill). It sought comments as to any early settlers, or history, pertaining to this road. Together, the historical society and the Upper Beaconsfield Association decided that the road should bear the name of Barnes. Council adopted the suggestion and conveyed their thanks to the UBA on 31 October 1979.15

Lillie Barnes

F, #1693, b. 31 Jul 1916, d. 2 Jan 1992
Father*Renselier Barnes b. 18 May 1871, d. 17 Sep 1950
Mother*Alice Sherriff b. 24 Nov 1882, d. 20 Jan 1959
Anecdote*Lillie Cooper attended Beaconsfield State School until she was 12, and then worked at her home. Later she had many jobs as a domestic and when she was a little older became a child's nurse working five days a week for the L M Baillieu family in Toorak, a job she held until she married Jack.
She remembers her mother working at the Luke's house. As there were no floor coverings in those days she would scrub their wooden floors, in return she would get a pram of groceries - she was never paid in money for her work - this may have been her choice as Beaconsfield was the nearest store.
The Luke house, known as "Montuna", was a large weatherboard with wide verandahs. On the eastern verandah were a number of small mail boxes with names on them. The postman would place the mail in the appropriate box and the locals come to the house later to pick it up. When the store was built about 1918 the post boxes were moved there. There was no home delivery.
Jack Cooper can remember the waterwheel at the Luke's being still present in 1935, when he was fishing for blackfish which were plentiful in a big hole near the wheel site.
Jack and Lillie were married in Berwick in 1937, they had photographs taken at Holm Park, by an alcoholic photographer who lost all the pictures, then the reception in the Barnes family home in Quamby Rd. Their first child Jean was born in 1938.
After their marriage they worked for a time in Warragul then returned here and bought their present home in 1939 - about the same time that the Buchanan’s bought "Pine Lodge", which the old Lukes had for a weekender in 1906. Before Mrs Buchanan it was owned by Pettitdenne? (Piddock-Denne)
They let the house whilst Jack worked on L M Baillieu's property "Minta" where he was in charge of the sheep. They returned to this house about 1958, when Mrs Baker was in the shop.
Jack has records of fires in Guys Hill in 1934, 1939, 1962, and 1983. In 1983 they stayed with their property - the police tried to move them off but they refused to go - Jean then came up and tried to force her mother into the car - Lillie hit her, nearly knocking her out, to her astonishment.
The police came back and Jack said to Lillie - don't let them see you walk - she had severe osteoarthritis of both knees and rocked as she walked - they would claim she was disabled.1

  • 3 Oct 1929: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Calembeen, the residence of Mr. J. M. Reed, chairman of the tourist committee, has been sold to Mr. Baxter. Joseph Martin Reed, Amy Jane Baxter11
  • 10 Dec 1931: PUBLIC MEETING AT BEACONSFIELD UPPER.
A public meeting, convened by the local Traders’ Association, was held in the Hall on Monday evening. The president of the Association, Mr. W. Wintle, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. The chairman stated in his opening remarks that the meeting had been called for the purpose of trying to restore the daily two mail service to and from the city, which, operated some time ago. At present the service was a drawback to the progress of the district, and he illustrated this by stating that a letter posted here at 5 o’clock p.m. on Saturday was not delivered in Melbourne or suburbs until Tuesday morning. In addtion to the two mails per day, he thought that a loose mail bag should be made up and despatched on Sunday night. This would assist business people and help the district at large, and he also considered that the mail should come direct from the mail train instead of being delayed as at present on the route. A number of other speakers stressed the necessity for this service, and the secretary of the Association and Mr. Ken. Hudson reported on their correspondence and interviews with the responsible officers of the Postmaster-General’s department. The following motion, proposed by Mr D. N. McBride, and seconded by Mr. Baxter, was then carried unanimously.
“That this meeting of resdents of Beaconsfield Upper give whole-hearted support to the Traders’ Association in their efforts to obtain a daily two mail service direct from mail train, and also that a loose bag be despatched from here on Sunday nights.”
It was decided that a petition be prepared for submission to the P.M.G. asking that these facilities be granted and that the obtaining of signatures to this petition be left in the hands of the Association. Kenneth Boulton Hudson, William Henry Wintle, David Norman McBride12

  • 28 Jan 1932: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Early last week bush fires broke out again. On Tuesday morning a call came from Montuna, to subdue a fire there, that was threatening a number of week-end homes. The Bush Fire Brigade burnt a break, but not, unfortunately, until portions of Mr. Geo. Grant’s orchard had been destroyed. Whilst they were away an other call came for help to quell a fire that had broken out on Judge Bevan’s property, and which threatened Mrs. Wheeler’s cottage and Mr. F. Funnell’s orchard; however, it was “got under’’ before much damage was done. In the afternoon a fire started on Dr. McArthur’s property, and, fanned by a strong wind, it swept over a big tract of country. Dr. McArthur’s sheds and outbuildings were only saved, after hard work. The fire then got into Mr. G. Lewis’s place, and all his sheds, including carts, harness and implements' were destroyed, and the house was saved with great difficulty. Whilst the fighters were concentrating their efforts to save Mr Lewis's house, the fire swept on to Mrs. Bennett’s whose house was destroyed. Mr. Morgan’s large sheds were destroyed, and one corner of his house was burned before the fire could be checked. All the valuable orchard implements, including a power spray pump, was destroyed in Mr. Morgan’s sheds. Another fire broke out at the head of the Cardinia Creek and burnt all the outbuildings, including a detached kitchen, at Mr. Ladds; the house was only saved after a hard fight. On Wednesday a fire started in the gully opposite Mr. Armstrong’s, and a break had to be burnt to save Mrs. Renfries, Miss McConachie’s and Messrs. Armstrong and Landor’s houses, as the wind was blowing fairly strong. Some members of the brigade were on duty all night to prevent the fire spreading to Messrs Ballanytyne’s, Walker’s, and Baxter’s places. On Sunday night the brigade was called out to burn a break to save Mr. Walker’s fine fernery from being destroyed, as a fire was coming up the Haunted Gully. Margaret Bennett21

Newspaper-Articles

  • 19 Jun 1930: ACCIDENT AT BEACONSFIELD. What might have resulted in a very serious accident occurred on the Prince’s Highway, half a mile on the east side Beaconsfield, at 4.30 p.m. on the 7th June.
Miss Gladys Clements, of Berwick, was driving a pony and jinker, and, in attempting to cross Prince’s Highway, the horse was struck under the neck and shoulders with a motor car, travelling at a fast rate of speed.
The shafts of the jinker were broken, and the horse, receiving a deep gash in the chest, fell on the-roadway, and later had to be destroyed. After striking the horse the car swerved to the side of the road, mounted a deep gutter, travelled along a narrow strip of land between the road and a deep drain for 50 yards, then came back to the roadway and came to a stand still 78 yards from where it struck the horse.
The car wag driven by John Morrison, of Wonthaggi. He had three passengers with him, and each of them received minor cuts from the broken windscreen, and were treated by Dr. Langmore, of Berwick. Miss Clements and a child which was in the jinker were not injured. Morrison was driving a small Morris Minor car, which was badly damaged. First Constable Walters is making enquiries.21
