Newspaper-Articles

  • 13 Oct 1890: Fatal boating accident on the Yarra. A YOUNG MAN DROWNED.
A boating accident, showing the danger of inexperienced people undertaking to manage a boat, took place on the Yarra, near Edwards's boatsheds, between 3 and 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A young man named Pierce Charles Thornton was drowned, and a companion named Tudor had a narrow escape. A party of four decided to go boating on the river, their names being Thomas Tudor, Surrey Hills ; Jno. Wells, Henry Noon, Richmond, and the deceased, who also resided at Richmond. Boats were obtained from Burns's boat sheds at the bottom of Punt-road, and the party proceeded down stream. Thornton and Tudor occupied one boat, while their companions took another, and they got down safely until near Princes-bridge. It is alleged that some horse play was then indulged in, and that Thornton and Tudor upset their boat and fell into the water when about midstream. Tudor, who could swim, made for the bank and got safely to land, but Thornton, who was splashing in the water, attracted the attontion of his friends in the other boat, and they made an attempt to save him. Had they been experts in the management of a boat Thornton might possibly have been saved, but their eager efforts at rescue were unavailing and the unfortunate young man sank in sight of his companions and a number of pleasure seekers who were on the banks. The body was recovered about 20 minutes later by Robert Cummins, the caretaker of Fuller's boat sheds, and conveyed to the morgue. The deceased, who was 26 years of age, was a married man, residing at Clifton-street, South Richmond, and leaves a wife and three young children. He was a painter and paperhanger employed by Mr Monk, of Swan-street, and was well known in the district, where his parents also reside.5
  • 6 Dec 1890: A concert and ball, under the auspices of the Richmond Bachelors, was held last night in the Richmond Town Hall, in aid of the widow und children of P. C. Thornton, a young man who was drowned while rowing on the Yarra about two months ago. A good attendance of local and district talent assisted at the affair, which was a great success.6
