  • 3 Nov 1855: Sly Grod selling. — Peter Bennett was apprehended on warrant, charged with this offence. A constable named Cummins stated that his mate and himself went to the shop kept by Bennett in Swanston street, and called for oysters. They were shown into a room, and ultimately they obtained some porter, for which they paid 2s 6d. [The Bench interrupted the witness by observing that in his information he had sworn it was ale they obtained.] It was ten minutes after they ordered the porter before they had if brought them. The mate stated that they gave the oysterman, Bennett, money to get the porter, aud saw him go out at the front door immediately after. The case was dismissed.4
