  • 9 Aug 1878: Death of father: HORRIBLE DEATH. The coroner (Mr R. Strickland) held an inquest on Wednesday at the Bendigo Hospital, on the body of the unfortunate man Richard Hinde, aged 41 years, who died in the institution, from the effects of scalds, which he received on the previous evening by falling into a vat of boiling beer at the Sandhurst brewery.
The evidence of Thomas Brain, brewer, was to the effect that the deceased who was assistant at the brewery in question, about three o'clock on Tuesday afternoon got a bag of sugar from witness to put on the frame work of the copper, for the brewer to use for brewing purposes. Witness had previously placed the half cover of the mash tub across the copper for the deceased to land the sugar on. At this time the copper contained a depth of some four feet of boiling wort. Witness was called away on business to Punch's Hotel, and when going towards the hotel he heard frightful screams. In consequence witness ran back to the brewery where he saw deceased in the boiling wort holding on to the side of the copper trying to get out. Witness at once pulled him out, at
the same time calling out for assistance, when Mr C. Punch came immediately Dr O'Donnell who shortly afterwards arrived, recommended the deceased's removal to theHospital, which was at once done. The deceased told witness that in landing the sugar on the half-cover, he slipped into the boiler, and the weight of the sugar overbalanced deceased, who fell into the vat.
The jury returned a verdict of death from being accidentally scalded.—Bendigo Evening News.6
