  • 23 May 1933: MR. CHARLES FRENCH, SEN. Leading Entomologist.
The death occurred at his home at Malvern late on Sunday night of Mr. Charles French, sen., one of the pioneer horticulturists of Australia and a noted entomologist. With his parents he arrived in Melbourne from England in 1852, when he was aged 10 years. There was only one railway line in Victoria then - from Port Melbourne to Melbourne. Four years afterward he was apprenticed to a nurseryman named Scott, in Hawthorn, where he worked for six years and learned his craft. While he was there he planted a specimen of Sequoia sempervirens in the Burnley Gardens. The tree is now more than 30ft in height, and is one of the finest trees in the garden. From Scott's nursery he went to Bogie's nursery in Punt road as manager. There he met Baron von Mueller, who recognised in young French a keen craftsman, and who invited him to join the Melbourne Botanic Gardens staff. Mr. French spent 20 years in the gardens in charge of all the glasshouses and propagating houses.
When Mr. J. L. Dow was Minister for Agriculture he decided that a Government entomologist was necessary, and offered the position to Mr. French, who accepted it, and was given two rooms in the Exhibiton Building-one for use as a museum and the other as an office. Later the departments were moved to the Law Courts Building and it was while he was working there that Mr. French wrote his volume "Handbook of the Destructive Insects of Victoria," which was published in 1891, and is still the standard authority on the subject. It earned him the gratitude of thousands of orchardists and other producers. To-day large sums are spent on research work on insects, but when Mr. French wrote his book few scientists realised their importance in the economic life of a country devoted principally to primary production. It is interesting to recall that his handbook was the one book published by the Department of Agriculture, which paid for its publication on the strength of the public demand. Mr. French retired from the position of Government entomologist in 1908, but retained, in retirement, all his youthful zest for horticulture and its allied crafts. He was one of the founders of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria.
On his retirement he was succeeded as Government entomologist by his son, Mr. Charles French, jun., who retained the position until he was appointed Government biologist of Victoria. Mr. French, jun., will reach retiring age next month. Another son, Mr. George French, who was a nurseryman and florist of Melbourne, died several years ago. There are two daughters—Mrs. T. Ewart, of Western Australia and Mrs. J. Turner, of New South Wales. Mrs. French survives her husband. The funeral will leave the mortuary parlours of Drayton and Garson, High street, Malvern, at half-past 2 o'clock this afternoon for the Cheltenham Cemetery.17
