  • 14 Jul 1954, G.O.M. Of Berwick Dies In 94th Year. Ex-Cr. L. D. Beaumont Was Former Shire President
FOLLOWING within two months of the death of his wife, Mrs. E. C. Beaumont, it is with regret we now record the death of ex-Cr. L. D. Beaumont, which occurred at his home, “Rheanva,” Prince’s Highway, Berwick, on Saturday last, July 10th, in his 94th year.
Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire (England) in the year 1850, Mr. Beaumont was educated at one of England’s Greater Public Schools—The Bedford Grammar School, during which time he represented his school in the rugby team and rowing crew. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the tea trade in Fenchurch St., London. Closely linked with the tea trade in those days were the fast clipper sailing ships, which raced home from China to bring the first shipment of the new season’s tea to London—prizes being awarded for the first cargo landed.
    BECAME SEAFARER
It was possibly this influence in his life which inspired him to take up a sea-faring life in his early manhood. Embarking on the sailing ship, "Zealandia,” he undertook a three-months voyage to New Zealand, where he entered the services of the Union Steamship Co. of New Zealand in 1883, and served for a period of nine years as a purser in some of that company’s earliest ships, notably the “Wairarapa,” "Waihora,” "Wanaka,” “Fijian,” "Te Ann” and “Rotomahana,” well-known ships to an earlier generation, and at that time engaged in the New Zealand, Australian and South Sea Island trade. In this regard Mr. Beaumont was awarded the company’s Bonus, allotted to the most successful purser in carrying out his duties, and which was recalled a few months ago, when the management of the company’s Melbourne office came out to Berwick and interviewed Mr. Beaumont concerning the company’s history new being compiled, he being at the time one of its oldest surviving ex-members.
    WENT ON LAND AT BERWICK
After his marriage in 1892, he relinquished the sea and took up farming pursuits at “Ardblair,” Berwick. He bred a notable herd of Ayrshire stud cattle, engaged in cheese-making on the farm and also established the first stud of Southdown sheep in the district, the nucleus of which he introduced from his cousin, the late Chas Grubb, of Strathroy, Tasmania. Furthering this interest in the betterment of line-stock breeding, he made a later importation of Southdown sheep and a Suffolk Punch horse from England. He also founded a stud of Shropshire sheep.
    COUNCILLOR FOR 12 YEARS
Entering the Berwick Shire Council in 1903, he represented the Berwick Riding for 12 years, during which time the Municipal Chambers at Pakenham East were built. Being Shire-President at the time, he presided at the official opening.
Formerly an adherent of the Church of England and confirmed by the Bishop of Ely, after his marriage he became a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Berwick, and was inducted as one of its first Elders during the Ministry of the late Rev. W. S. Whiteside. B.A. He was also honorary secretary and treasurer of the church for a number of years.
During his public life Mr Beaumont was very interested in the establishment of the Berwick Girls’ School, becoming its first treasurer to raise finance in its promotion. The school developed into the now well-known St. Margaret’s Girls’ School, Berwick.
He took a keen and active interest in the Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society, and, indeed, was the President when it was so named in 1918, after the alteration from its old title of “The Mornington Farmers’ Society,” of which he had been president in the years 1910-11 and 1911-12, and a committeeman many years previously. He was one of the first recipients of the society’s highest honor, having conferred on him an Honorary Life Membership in the year 1925.
He is survived by his daughter Anne (Mrs. S. A. Greaves), son, Norman, and two granddaughters, Louise and Sonia Beaumont.
The Rev. Scott Tanner, of Berwick, conducted the service in the home and the burial service in the Berwick Cemetery in the presence of a large number of mourners. Pall-bearers were Crs. G. Rae, S. Thewlis, S. Harris, C. Greaves, A. Robinson, Messrs. H. Bourke, F. Loveridge and Dr. Langmore, snr.
Messrs. Gamar & Son Pty. Ltd. were the funeral directors.16
