BORN at Pakenham and a resident of the district for all but three of her 79 years, Mrs. Mary Stephenson, of Bullarto road, Kooweerup North, was widely mourned when she passed away on January 10. Her health had not been very good for some months prior to her death.
The late Mrs. Stephenson raised a large family and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Her passing came as a sorrowful blow to them all, and especially to her husband, 5 sons and 5 daughters.
Five sons and one son-in-law carried the casket at the largely attended funeral on Monday, when the remains were laid to rest in the Pakenham cemetery. The pall-bearers were Cr. C. Wadsley, W. Peters, B. Turner, H. Ritchie, J. Shelton, Y. Wadsley, W. Ellett, B. Harvey, J. Savage and C. McGregor, Mr. John Scott read the burial service and W. J. Garnar and Son conducted the funeral.5

  • 16 Nov 1893: A very enthusiastic meeting was held at Mrs. Brown's "Terracedale," Northcote, under the anspices of the Women's Temperance Union. Mrs. Swan presided, and after a few remarks called upon Miss Dumphrys to sing "Remember now thy Creator."
Mrs. Phillips gave a splendid address on "Responsibility." She spoke of people shifting their responsibility on to others. For instance-in drunkard's homes, the lmshand will say " My wife drives me to the drink," and vice-versa. We read in the bible "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging." Doctors say that wine strengthens. Who are we to believe: God or man ? How do people become drunkards ? By not follow ing the teachings of the bible. Mrs. Bowman sang "Christian Martyrs" very effectively. Mr. John Vale then spoke a few words and asked all present to become members of the W.C.T.U., and to wear the white bow. Another song was then given. '"The Better Land," by Mr. E. Brown, after which refreshments were handed round and brought to a close the best meeting of the union ever held in Fitzroy, seventy-four ladies being present.13
