Newspaper-Articles

  • 31 Oct 1945: Another local Boy Falls ... Borneo. PTE T. H. ELY DIES IN DEATH MARCH
SATURDAY evening brought the sad tidings to Mrs Ely of 5 Hemming St., Dandenong, of the death of her son, VX65080 Pte T. H. Ely (22nd Independent Brigade), probably better known in and around Dandenong as Tommy Wedlock.
Pte Ely, was one of those who fell in the grim death march from Sandakan in Borneo. He died on March 13th, 1945. Only 20, he was a fine lad and his mother and step-father were eagerly looking forward to his return with the other P.O.W. Then came Saturday’s telegram like a bolt from the blue. Tom was the son of Mrs. Ely and the late Mr. James Wedlock, and was educated at the Dandenong East School. He enlisted when only 17 and after nine months in home defence, sailed for Malaya. When Singapore fell he was captured and for two years he was listed as missing. Then came the hopeful news that he was a P.O.W. His mother had four letters from him and also heard one broadcast. The last of these letters, although written 18 months ago, only arrived a fortnight ago.
Before enlisting Tom worked at the Berry Basket Factory in Richmond, and was very highly thought of by his employers and fellow employees. He was a great out-door lad and had many pals, to whom news of his death will be a tragic blow. To his family we extend the deepest sympathy. Clementina Pert2
