  • 23 Dec 1884: A GOLDEN WEDDING
Mr. and Mrs. John Camm, of Geelong, will celebrate their golden wedding on Christmas Day at the residence of their son-in-law, Mr. John Barr, of Turkeith.
Mr. and Mrs. Camm, who were married in 1834, are still in the best of health, and according to their photographs they bear their age remarkable well. On this auspicious occasion all their descendants — twenty-five in number — will assemble around the festive table at Mr. Barr's residence, when mutual congratulations and best wisls for the future will be exchanged. The period of the year for celebrating such a happy event is indeed most opportune, for Christmas is the season when a reunion with the family circle generally takes place, though many of its members may have to inconvenience them selves, and journey long distances to meet together once again round the social table.
Meeting together as Mr. and Mrs. Camm and their children and their children's children will meet, must indeed be a happy event in their lifetimes, and we trust that they may long be spared to remember Christmas day of 1884. To commemorate the event a very handsome address for presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Camm has been prepared by, one of their sons, Mr. Thomas C. Camm, who is a State school
teacher, residing at Berwick. The address, which is really a work of art, is illuminated, and framed with a broad gilt moulding. On the left-hand corner is a portrait of Mr. Camm, and on the right hand corner there is a portrait of Mrs. Camm—with their names beneath both of which show to great advantage.
At the bottom of the lettering and almost directly between the portraits, there is a sketch of the church in which the happy couple were married. The lettering of the address is admirably executed, and is in the style of typography known as Boston Black, which very much resembles the old English letters, the difference being that the first-named is bolder and rather heavier in the face. The whole is surrounded with handsomely designed and original columns and floral wreaths which rise on the top to an arch, where there are five cherubims, three of them clasping the wreaths which fall gracefully down on either side, whilst the other two are tinkling golden " wedding" bells. The ground work of the address is of a light lavender color, which well sets off the bright tints of the flowers. In the centre of the columns on the left hand side are the words "Xmas England," and on the opposite side are "Xmas Victoria." The idea and execution of the address are good, and is evidence of the artistic taste and skill of Mr. Thos C. Camm. In the address which appears below there is in the first division the names of the three sons and daughter and son-in-law and daughters-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Camm, and in the second division are the names of their grand-children.
Following is a copy of the address:
    DEAR FATHER AND MOTHER,
We, your children and grand-children, assembled at Turkeith to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of your wedding day, congratulate you on this auspicious occasion, and sincerely trust that the Providence which has so graciously blessed your united lives for half a century, will spare you to each other and to us for many years to come.

  • 24 Jan 1877: SUDDEN DEATH AT BERWICK. INQUEST ON THE BODY OF MRS. TROUP.
Dr. Candler held an inquest on the body of Mrs Troup, wife of Mr. John Troup, farmer, of Berwick, who died suddenly on Tuesday last.—Dr. Thomas Elmes deposed that he had made a post mortem examination of the body that morning and found that the aorta, a large blood vessel leading from the heart, was ruptured, and the chest full of blood and the heart being much diseased. Had examined the stomach of the deceased, but found no trace of poison. Death had resulted from rupture of an aneurism of the aorta. Deceased might have lived a few moments longer, but death was imminent at any moment.—Amelia Troup, daughter of the deceased woman, deposed that on Tuesday afternoon her mother was out in the verandah stirring herself a cup of cocoa, when she suddenly threw up her arms and fell backward dead. She called her father, who came up immediately and carried her mother into the house. Her mother had previously complained of headache and pain in the chest, but did not appear to think anything serious was the matter with her, and she had intended going into Berwick that afternoon, but the weather was too hot.
The Coroner summed up, and stated that the medical evidence clearly showed that the deceased died from a rupture of the aorta, the result of natural causes. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.4
