  • 17 Sep 1926: OBITUARY. THE LATE MRS. CORFIELD.
    The friends of Mr. Joseph R. Corfield of Sayer-street, Midland Junction will extend to him their sincere sympathy in his very sad bereavement, in loss of his wife, who passed away at her residence, Sayer-street on Friday last, the 27th inst. The deceased had been seriously ill for many months past and despite medical skill and careful nursing, death came as above stated. She resided in Midland for the past 20 years and will be sadly missed by her husband, sons and friends. The funeral took place on Saturday, the 28th inst., the cortege leaving the residence, Sayer-street and proceeding per motor to Karrakatta, where the interment was made in the Presbyterian portion of the cemetery, the Rev. Adamson officiating. The chief mourners were Mr. J. R. Corfield (husband), Messrs. Trant, William Ourish and H. Baliff (sons), Mrs. F. Ourish (daughter-in-law). Amongst those at the graveside were noticed Messrs. F. Islet, A. Cook, H. Gladden, R. Burton, D. Henwood, H. Rance, Mesdames Sharp, Best, Fisher, Hellrich, Miss Grace Fisher and others. Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Farrell Bros.12

    The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Best, one of the oldest and most respected of the Midland Company's servants, took place at Midland Junction on Monday last. As showing the esteem in which the late gentlemen was held a large concourse of friends and sympathisers attended to pay their last respects.
    The chief mourners were:— Mrs May Best (widow), Lizzie and Ivy (daughters), William (son), and Messrs Corfield (4), Snaitt, McNamara, Langlord and Cook, all relatives of the deceased. The Foresters' funeral service was read by the D.S.C.R. Bro W. Kilpatrick, the late Bro Best having been a member of Pride of the Swan branch for 15 years, and been through all the chairs of office, at the time of his death being a P.C.R. of the Order.
    The following lodge officers were pall-bearers: Bros A. Hyatt, P.D.C.R; J. J. Taylor, P.C.R; E. Watson, P.C.R; T. Robinson, P.C.R. j A. Penn, P.C.R; J. R Banks, P.C.R.: A. Beer, P.C.R; A. Latto, S.W; R. Yardley, P.C.R; W. Kilpatrick, sec.
    Amongst those who attended were Messrs Duthie, Watson, Sampson, Robertson, Hitchcock, Hillman (2), Laidley, Hall, Thomas, Rossa, Rylands, Scrivener, Townsend, and officers and brethren of Court Pride of the Swan, A.O.F. A large number of wreaths and floral tokens were received from the following :—Mr Stead (General Manager Midland Railway), Mr Horan (Traffic Inspector), Midland Railway Officers' Association, Midland Railway Employees' Union, Government Railways Staff, and from Messrs Hillman, Haiken, Cook, Laidley, Howson, Ladies' Guild Presbyterian Church, Foresters' Lodge No. 8256, and others whose names could not be ascertained.
    The Rev. Haynes conducted the burial service and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs A. D. Jones and Co., Ltd.
    A memorial service to Mr Best is to be conducted in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday night.6

  • 24 Apr 1917: The second inquiry was in respect to the death of Pearl Harmer Aurisch (12 months). Frank Arthur Aurisch, father of the little girl, said that he went home from work on Saturday, and sat down to the dinner table. He poured out tea in cups, and left them on the table. One of the cups was knocked over, the hot tea falling on the child. Witness's wife immediately stripped off the little girl's clothing, and flour was applied to the neck, shoulder and wrist, which had been scalded.
    The child was then taken to a chemist's shop, and from there it was taken to a doctor, and she was conveyed to hospital. It improved in health, and was afterwards conveyed to witness's home. Later the child showed signs of sickness, and, as its condition did not improve, it was taken back to the Children's Hospital, where it died.5

  • 23 Mar 1899: The friends of Mr and Mrs John Eccles, of High street, Kyneton, will be sorry to hear of the death of their eldest daughter, Mrs Jane Corfield, which occurred in the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, from typhoid fever, on Monday night, after a fortnight's illness. The deceased's husband and two daughters (aged 11 and 5 respectively) survive her. The remains of the deceased, who was well and favorably known in Kyneton, were interred, in the Melbourne cemetery yesterday, the chief mourners being her mother and brothers and sisters.4

  • 9 Jun 1948: Berwick Hotel Changes Hands
    THE BERWICK HOTEL, century old Berwick landmark, has changed hands and on May 26th the licence passed from Miss Helen Struth to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon R. Blackburn, from Kew.
    The new owners have purchased the freehold and “Mine Host” Blackburn will need no introduction to Gippsland and Peninsula folk. For the past 12 and 14 years he has been the Carlton and United Brewery’s popular traveller for that territory. Mr. Blackburn told a “Journal” representative that it his intention to run the hotel decently and cater not only for the district needs, but also those of the travelling public.
    This old Berwick hostelry has a history, as it must be 100 years old. Miss Struth presented the new owners with a photo of the hotel taken away back in 1858 and it had then been erected some years.
    Berwick folk will regret Miss Struth’s departure after having conducted the hotel successfully for 18 years, during which she was a good friend to local sporting organisations. At present she is living in Melbourne, but we understand there is a likelihood of her returning later to make her home at Berwick. Before going to Berwick she had the freehold of the Spring Vale Hotel and prior to that was well known in the Warrnambool district.
    Berwick folk will wish Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn every success in their new enterprise.5
  • 16 Jan 1980: Berwick mourns death of Gordon Blackburne
    The association of the late Mr. Gordon Robert Blackburne, with St. John's Church of England, Toorak, began when he was baptised there as a tiny baby, and so it was very fitting that his funeral service on Wednesday, 19th December, should be conducted in the same church.
    Mr. Blackburne was a choirboy at St. John's, and was married there. His two sons were married in the church also, and his only grandchild was baptised there.
    Mr. Blackburne died very peacefully in the Berwick hospital on Monday, 17th December after having been admitted on the previous Wednesday. He was 74 years old.
    Born in Toorak in 1905 he spent his boyhood there, and after leaving school, worked with an electrical firm for a number of years.
    He then took on a job with the Carlton and United Breweries and was a business representative for the whole of Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula. Whilst employed in this position he made a host of friends in the Gippsland area.
    In 1937 he married Miss Royalle Polglase from Kew and they lived in South Yarra and in Kew.
    During the Second World War, Mr. Blackburne joined the army and was posted to Queensland where he ran clubs for the soldiers. He was also posted to the Dutch East Indies and reached the rank of Lieutenant before being released from the army.
    In May, 1940 Gordon and Royalle Blackburne came to live in Berwick as proprietors of the Berwick Inn which they purchased from Miss Helen Struth. The hotel was very run down and they worked very hard to build it up and made it a very popular place for visitors from all over the world.
    Mr. Blackburne will be remembered by many as a very dignified "mine host." The hotel in those days catered for house guests and boasted a superb dining room.
    He was supported in this by his wife Royalle who worked very hard, his sister Mrs. Gladys McKenzie and his niece Vanda Blackburne who was his hostess.
    His fame as a host brought to Berwick, many people who would not otherwise have come. Friends can well remember the days when the late Smacka Fitzgibbon would stop his vintage car outside the hotel, and the time when the film "On the Beach" was filmed in Berwick and the Inn was visited by Gregory Peck and billeted many of the film crew.
    Mr. Blackbume's early model Rolls Royce was a familiar sight, at the kerb by the hotel, in those days.
    Many well-known racing people made the Inn a regular stopping place when they attended the Pakenham Races.
    When his two sons became involved in the Melbourne Hunt Club, Mr. Blackburne revived the English tradition of the spirit cup before the hunt. This was always a very picturesque event when the huntsmen on their horses came to the Inn to partake of the cup before the hunt began.
    In 1960 the hotel was leased and the Blackburnes went to live in Peel Street.
    Mr. Blackburne loved cricket, tennis, golf and football and was a loyal supporter of the Berwick Football Club. He served on the committee and was a past president.
    He was also very involved in working for the Berwick Chamber of Commerce, was a foundation member, a past president and the only Life Member.
    He firmly believed in supporting the business houses of Berwick and during his years at the Inn always bought his supplies locally.
    Mr. Blackburne was a stalwart of the Liberal Party and was a former president of the Berwick branch.
    During recent years he joined the Berwick R.S.L.
    A huge crowd attended the funeral service at St. John's and a close friend of the family, Mr. Ross Jones gave the address.
    A very large number of people also attended the Springvale Crematorium after the service.
    Mr. Blackburne is survived by his wife Royalle, two sons Anthony and Julian and grandson Austin.6
