  • 15 Mar 1883: INQUEST. An inquest was held by Dr. Candler yesterday Prahran, upon the body of a man named Peter Mather, 53 years of age, who died on the 12th inst. The deceased retired to rest on the night of the date in question apparently in his usual health ; but shortly afterwards he was found dead by his wife.
    Dr. Joseph Crook made a post mortem examination of the body, and certified that the deceased died from heart disease. A verdict to that effect was returned.7
  • 15 Mar 1883: INQUEST. DEATH FROM INTEMPERANCE.
    Mr. Candler, the district coroner, held an inquest at Porter-Street, Prahran, on Wednesday on the body of Peter Mather, aged 53 years, a solicitor, who was found dead in his room on the afternoon of the 12th inst. The deceased was found sitting on the floor of his room with his head leaning against the bed. He appeared to be in a fit, and Dr. Cooke was sent for, and on his arrival life was found to be extinct. The deceased had been drinking that day, and for some time previously. Dr. Cooke made a post-mortem examination of the body, and certified that the cause of death was disease of the heart and lungs. Death was imminent for some time past. The organs were greatly diseased from long continued intemperance. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.8
